Independence Baptist Church, Independence, TX 5/3/14

This is the little museum attached to Independence Baptist Church, where Rufus Burleson was once pastor and where Sam Houston was saved during one of Rufus' services.  It has some historical information about early Texas Baptist life and the early days of Baylor University, originally situated in Independence.
This is a view from the pew where the Houston family sat.  Sam Houston supposedly carved the initials S. H. to mark his spot, so to speak.

A photo of one of the our heroes, Dr. B. H. Carroll, who was in turn, a Texas Ranger, a Confederate Soldier in the 8th Texas Cavalry, a pastor, teacher and a co-founder of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.  Dr. Carroll is said to have introduced George Truett to Josephine Jenkins and pestered Truett about her until he got up the courage to ask her out.  Carroll later performed their wedding ceremony.

The captions are a little hard to read, but on the extreme left is Dr. Truett and on the extreme right is Gov. Pat Neff.
